Rural Community Microfinance Service Trust (RUCOMS Trust), Malawi

This project contributed to the well-being of families that care for HIV/AIDS orphans in the Karonga district of Malawi, including older orphans who care for their siblings. RUCOMS Trust provided micro-credit and small business training to a total of 142 families (women headed households) in the rural communities. Individual families received the microloans through 15 community solidarity groups which enabled them to start or expand their income generating activities for purposes of meeting their family’s basic needs including education, health and nutrition support of over 700 orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) under their care and guardianship.

Justice for Children, Uganda

This project sought to provide justice for vulnerable children, including former child soldiers in postwar Northern Uganda, by addressing their needs and helping them to become productive members of the society.

Justice for Children supported formerly abducted youth and other vulnerable children with emotional and psychological support. Through CARITAS, a partner organization, this project has counseled over 150 formerly traumatized children and were able to connect 93 of those counseled to Gulu Youth Training Center for vocational skills. This project also successfully identified 378 orphans and other vulnerable children who had become homeless because of the war and were able to find them foster families where they were accepted and treated as children.
